This holiday season, clean your iPhone’s bum. There’s probably a lot of fluff in there.

When I was young, maybe 6(?), on Christmas Eve, some legend went around the neighbourhood yelling “Ho! Ho! Ho!” at around 7:30. I remember my sister and I literally running to bed so Santa wouldn’t miss our house. To that legend, whoever you are, wherever you are, I remember.
A few years ago I decided to write a short story for nanowrimo. I got half way through with major themes, the characters and the setting. But couldn’t really tie it all together. I just explained the story to ChatGPT and said “help me tie this together”, and… it did! Holy crap!
I’m loving my M2 MacBook Air. Although I’ll need to get a screen to plug in to for productivity reasons. I could buy an almost retina 27” 4K screen for ~NZ$650, or I could buy the 5K 27” studio display for THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS. It’d be an amazing screen, but not that amazing.
Everything is going fine over at Twitter. They just don’t like *checks notes* any other social media. Wait, what!?
Fellow tech nerds. I’m looking for the modern version of an Apple TimeCapsule. A few TB. Low power. Wifi NAS. Doesn’t have to have RAID. Don’t want to hook up a raspberry pi to a harddrive.
Load up a YouTube video on my new computer for the first time. Inexplicably see an advert. Realise I hadn’t installed Vinegar yet. Like browsing the web when I’m away from my piholed local network - the internet is terrible!
If Pōneke/Wellington keeps cracking 20°, whanau, I’m going to have to switch to ice coffee. It is the way.
I’m not saying it is, but unsealing, unboxing and starting a brand new computer is as close to a religious experience as I’ll ever likely have. Right up there with the first glug of an ice cold lager on a hot day.
After 7 years of faithful, flawless use my 5K iMac is either being turned into a server or sold (haven’t decided yet).
I’m incredibly disappointed there’s no way to natively turn it into a monitor for my new laptop. The screen is still fantastic and vast.
I have a sketchy Raspberry Pi that eats SD Cards and constantly crashes. I have called it kererū, which is a joke other Kiwis will get. Had to eventually get it running off a drive plugged in via USB, and it’s been pretty stable since. The lesson is, SD Cards are fragile.
New laptop. Busy Weekend. Still unopened.
(take that Hemingway! (yes, I know it’s unlikely he ever wrote the for sale a baby shoes line.))
We got an espresso machine at the office this week. I’m tuning in a perfect flat white while others are adamant that espresso is made with a grind resembling boulders. Never let a bunch of nerds go at a machine they think they understand but actually don’t. ☕️
I’ve officially joined the league of bespectacled gentlemen. It’s been a good run, though. But death and age comes for us all. Hoping to avoid the former for a little longer…
Apple stopping the production of the Airport, and by extension, the Time Capsule, is so absurd. The weird, inelegant hacks I have to do to make Time Machine work like it used to with a Time Capsule is ridiculous.
Especially considering there’s no iCloud Time Machine.
I simply can’t express how much I’m looking forward to all of central Pōneke/Wellington having the speed limit dropped to 30 km/h. Driving in to town should be tortuous. More people walking, scootering, using public transport and bikes. Plant trees in decommissioned car parks.
Just had a long, rolling earthquake here in Pōneke. 5.2 M initial magnitude. A little too exciting for a Friday evening.
When everything fails, it’s probably DNS.
Woo hoo! Second day of summer. Today’s high temperature… 15°C!?
Rode in to work a little earlier today. Much less traffic, a lot more people on bikes! (there were a couple behind me out of frame too). Felt a lot safer riding in a pack of 9. SO looking forward to the Newtown cycle lanes being finished.
My “Yes, I know you’re support, but I’m not going to follow any of your recommendations or answer any of your questions so you can help me, and instead do a bunch of other stuff instead.” t-shirt is raising a lot of questions already answered by my t-shirt.
I’m going to do it, whanau. I’m going to buy a new computer to replace my 7 year old 5K iMac. Unless someone gives me a reason I shouldn’t…?
As an example of the dangerous driving, this is how close the sign-written ute got passing me. I have the video too. A friend said “wait it out over the weeken”, but I’m still angry about it, so complaint to be laid. The lesson is, don’t endanger people ina company vehicle.
My “Dangerous Driving” photo/video album has been growing quickly in the last two weeks I’ve been riding around with a camera on my helmet. 4 worth me going through the hassle of pulling them off the camera and editing them. One of which was a sign-written ute (pick up truck).
I have come to the realisation that I need glasses. I borrowed someone’s at the weekend to read a menu in low light and once focussed thought “holy shit! I need glasses!” So next week, imma get glasses. I’ve made it well into my fifth decade without them, so that’s a good run.
